The Staatsliedenkwartier was largely built in the 1960s. The neighbourhood has many terraced houses and small blocks of flats. Around 3,000 people live there. Amenities such as a shopping centre, playgrounds and primary schools are nearby.
Over the years, the make-up of the neighbourhood has changed. More and more people who are on a tight budget are living here. Sometimes they face other problems as well. As a result, not everyone finds it a pleasant place to live. It is important to look at how we can improve the situation.
Several neighbours get on well with one another. At the same time, there are also many people who don’t know one another. We want to do something about that. For example, by creating more places for people to meet, and organising more activities for young and old alike.
Steps have already been taken in recent years to revitalise the neighbourhood. Local residents are actively involved in this. We will continue with this work. Many areas are in need of a facelift: the shopping centre, streets and play areas. The small gardens and alleys around the council flats could also do with some attention.
Not all residents feel safe in the neighbourhood. This is particularly true in areas where drugs are used or where groups of people loiter. Litter is also a major problem. And some road junctions are unsafe.
Many homes are outdated and often poorly insulated. This means less enjoyment of your home and higher heating bills. Together, we can do something about it.
Together with residents and a wide range of organisations, we’re setting to work to make the neighbourhood a little bit nicer. ‘Contributors’ play an important role in this. These are residents who want to actively contribute their ideas and get involved. We’ve drawn up a plan of action setting out the initiatives we’ll be tackling.
The following areas will receive particular attention in the coming years. Firstly, we are working to improve social cohesion in the neighbourhood. We are also revitalising public spaces. We are looking at how we can ensure that everyone can enjoy living here. And finally, we are going to work towards creating a sustainable neighbourhood.
