Phasing
The work will be carried out in phases right up to 2025. The original plan was to complete the work by 2024, but for a number of reasons this has been pushed back slightly. This gives us a little more time for preparation, allows us to better account for the current long lead times for materials, and gives utility companies ample opportunity to replace cables and pipes prior to the redevelopment. The schedule also takes the neighbourhood’s drainage into account. On the phasing map you can view the current schedule and order.
Sound
There is also a drawback: cobblestone surfaces tend to be noisier than tarmac. The council therefore only uses cobblestone surfaces on streets designated as 30-km zones. Major through roads such as Regentesselaan, Kerklaan and Meester van Rhemenslaan will retain their tarmac surfacing. Unfortunately, not everyone always adheres to speed limits. Additional measures have been taken in the neighbourhood to reduce speed, such as speed bumps. An added benefit is that they discourage rat-running. Logically, lower speeds and less intensive use of the road have an impact on noise levels.
We also took noise into account when purchasing the paving stones. We opted for angular, straight paving stones. These make less noise than rounded ones.
Disconnecting rainwater
When redesigning streets, we also divert rainwater away from the sewer system wherever possible. This is also the case in the Parks. By installing an infiltration sewer, rainwater is channelled into a separate sewer system so that it is gradually absorbed into the groundwater. This is more sustainable, helps to combat drought and also reduces disruption even during heavy rainfall.
The roadworks provide a good opportunity to disconnect the downpipes from your own home from the sewerage system as well. We also have a grant scheme for this. You can drain the rainwater onto the street or collect it in the garden and allow it to seep into the ground.
