Council approves traffic measures for north-east Apeldoorn

On 3 November 2026, the Municipal Executive approved a policy document setting out a package of traffic measures for the north-east of Apeldoorn. These measures are necessary to ensure the city remains accessible, safe and liveable, both now and in the future. Apeldoorn is set to continue growing in the coming years, and this requires a transport system that can keep pace with that growth. The measures focus on Laan van Zevenhuizen and the surrounding roads and cycle routes in the north-east of Apeldoorn, including Sluisoordlaan and the access route to Zuidbroek.

In granting its approval, the council has expressed a positive view of the measures, which are to be developed further. Residents, business owners and other stakeholders from the immediate vicinity will be involved in the further development of the plans. The council is organising an information meeting for this purpose on 19 November. Consultation processes will be launched for the various projects, so that local residents, business owners and other stakeholders can contribute their ideas to the further development of the plans.

Why are these measures necessary?

Apeldoorn is growing. Over the coming years, new homes, jobs and facilities will be added. At the same time, the council wants to ensure there is space for liveable neighbourhoods, safe cycle routes and an attractive city centre with more space for people to meet, linger, walk and cycle. This requires a transport network that can grow alongside the city.

That is why it is important for traffic to make use of the city’s main road network as much as possible, and residential streets as little as possible. The urban ring road plays a key role in this. Traffic studies show that Laan van Zevenhuizen and the surrounding roads in the north-east of Apeldoorn will form one of the biggest bottlenecks in the transport network in the future. Without measures, delays will increase and pressure on surrounding residential areas will grow.

Through these measures, the council aims to ensure that traffic flows more smoothly along the routes designated for that purpose. This will keep Apeldoorn accessible and create space for safe residential streets, good cycle routes and future developments in the city.

Which measures are being further developed?

The council has agreed to the further development of the following measures:

  • Widening of Laan van Zevenhuizen from two to four lanes;
  • A grade-separated junction with a roundabout at the junction of Laan van Zevenhuizen and Sluisoordlaan;
  • Traffic lights at the junction of Laan van Zevenhuizen and Zilverschoon;
  • A bridge or tunnel for cyclists and pedestrians between De Mheen and De Sprenkelaar;
  • Opening up the existing bus lane to provide additional access to Zuidbroek;
  • Changes to Sluisoordlaan, including safer crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists;
  • The closure of the junction between Saloméstraat and Laan van Zevenhuizen.

What happens next?

Over the coming period, the measures will be further developed through draft plans and studies. These will take into account road safety, quality of life, green spaces and the design of public spaces. The local community will be involved in this further development.

The implementation of the measures on Laan van Zevenhuizen and Sluisoordlaan is currently scheduled to take place between 2029 and 2031. After that, the bus lane in Zuidbroek may also be opened to car traffic.
