The Rivierenkwartier is becoming greener, safer and future-proof

The Rivierenkwartier will be refurbished over the coming years. We are making the neighbourhood greener, safer and ready for the future. We are doing this because residents value more green spaces, better play areas and road safety.

We also want to tackle issues such as flooding and overcrowding around the shopping centre. We are working in phases. In Rivierenkwartier Noord, we will start work in May 2026. We are currently preparing for Rivierenkwartier Zuid. On this page, you can find out what we are doing, where and when.

  • Cycle path to be slightly re-routed → improved safety
  • Minor adjustment to the pre-sorting bays

IJsselstraat

  • Three traffic-calming measures (narrowings and speed bumps)

Planning

  • Start of implementation: mid-April / May 2026

What are the plans?

We are going to replace the tarmac with cobblestones, install a stormwater drainage system and make the neighbourhood greener wherever possible. We are also going to tackle road safety.

Where shall we get started?

In and around the area near the shopping centre on Maasstraat, Lekstraat and the surrounding streets and courtyards. The map (to be added later) shows the work area.

Open Evening

Before we get started, we would like to share our plans with residents of Rivierenkwartier Zuid. They have therefore been invited by letter to the drop-in session on 13 April. On the evening of the event, we will present the plans, and residents will have the opportunity to ask questions, share suggestions and discuss matters with the local council.

Date: Monday 13 April 2026

Time: open to all from 7.00 pm to 9.00 pm

Location: DokZuid, 1e Wormenseweg 460

Why are we getting involved in the Rivierenkwartier?

The Rivierenkwartier was largely built in the 1960s and comprises many terraced houses and flats. Residents appreciate the facilities in the neighbourhood, but there are also challenges:

  • a growing need for more greenery and shade
  • crowds and parking problems around the shopping centre and Dok Zuid
  • Some of the residents are affected by poverty or other problems
  • the need for better play areas and road safety

That is why, in collaboration with residents and organisations, a wellbeing agenda drawn up. It sets out how we are working to create a liveable, safe and green neighbourhood.
