If you are getting married abroad, foreign authorities may ask you for a certificate of no impediment to marriage or a certificate of capacity to marry. These are different documents. You can read about the difference between them below.
Certificate of Single Status
The certificate of no impediment to marriage is a extract from the Basic Register of Persons (BRP). Your marital status is stated on the extract. You can apply for the extract from your local authority or from an RNI authority if you live abroad.
Certificate of no impediment to marriage
A certificate of eligibility to marry confirms that you and your partner are permitted to marry under Dutch law. The certificate contains the full details of both partners. You only need the certificate of eligibility to marry if the local authority where you are getting married requests it. The certificate of eligibility to marry is valid for six months from the date of issue.
The following conditions apply to applications.
- You live in Apeldoorn, or Apeldoorn was your last place of residence in the Netherlands.
- You or your partner holds Dutch nationality.

When issuing a certificate of legal capacity to marry, we check the original certificates. We will discuss with you whether you would like to make an appointment at the counter for this, or whether you would prefer to send the documents by post.
Requirements for the documents and declarations you must submit:
- Original documents only. You may need to have them legalised.
- The document must be in Dutch, English, French or German. Otherwise, you must first have your foreign document translated and legalised.

Which documents do you need to bring with you to the appointment or send in?
- a copy of both parties’ proof of identity (passport or identity card)
- birth certificates for both of you (only if you were born abroad)
- a certificate from your local authority stating your marital status and nationality
- evidence of the dissolution or termination of a previous marriage (if you have been married before)
