Summary: 'Redevelopment of Vlijtseweg'

Presentation of the preliminary design

Introduction

The project leader opened the evening by explaining the importance of the redevelopment. The main reasons are:

  • Better protection for cyclists is essential.
  • Traffic speeds need to be reduced.
  • The tarmac is badly worn.
  • The sewer needs to be replaced or renovated.
  • An additional stormwater drain is required.
  • A good connection between the swimming pool and the car park is desirable.

A look back at the 2025 open day

The preliminary design was presented during the first public consultation evening in 2025. Visitors were able to give their feedback and highlight key points for consideration. In addition, the project management team provided an update on the current state of play and looked ahead to the next phase: the appointment of the construction team.

Developments on Vlijtseweg

Various development projects are underway along Vlijtseweg. A new swimming pool and a multi-storey car park are to be built, whilst housing development plans are also taking shape. At the same time, traffic volumes are increasing. These developments are being considered holistically within the area vision, with the aim of relieving congestion on Vlijtseweg and improving accessibility.

A phased approach

Phase 1

Safety and essential maintenance In this phase, the most urgent issues will be addressed, such as the sewer system and the worn-out tarmac. Cycling safety will also be improved and speed limits reduced.

Phase 2

Further traffic adjustments (future) In the second phase, the focus will be on optimising traffic flows and implementing additional measures to make the Vlijtseweg a low-traffic, future-proof road. Any additional measures will be implemented following a monitoring exercise.

Status – Where are we now?

  • Preliminary Design (VO) completed
  • Tendering within the construction team
  • The Preliminary Design (PD) will be further developed into the Final Design (FD)
  • The DO is being developed into the Implementation Design (UO)

Project planning

  • Mid-May 2026 – Contractor announced
  • 2026 – Detailed design of the sewerage system and bridges
  • January 2027 – Start of implementation
  • September 2027 – Swimming pool open
  • Mid-2028 – Other work completed

Please note! During the works, there may be temporary disruption for local residents and traffic.

Traffic

The traffic engineer explains the following topics:

  • Traffic management
  • Speed reduction
  • Cyclist safety
  • Accessibility

Traffic situation design

Area: From Van Deventerstraat to Edisonlaan

Key features:

  • Speed limit: 30 km/h – this improves road safety for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.
  • Main road: The route is designated as a main road, meaning that traffic on this road has right of way over intersecting roads and exits.

Objective: The design aims to create a safe and well-organised traffic environment, with clear rules and priorities for road users.

Deventerstraat

  • Start at 30 km/h
  • Cyclists on the red tarmac on Vlijtseweg and Deventerstraat
  • Right of way retained
  • Waiting area for cyclists
  • Entrance at Vlijtsekade (slightly narrower)

Thresholds South

We’ll discuss this further.

Johan Steenbergenstraat/lock

  • Level crossing with right of way (Vlijtseweg has right of way)
  • Bolderstraat with access ramp (as at present)
  • Cycle path to the lock: shared-use path with right of way (as at present)

Zwitsal

  • Access via the priority road (Vlijtseweg has right of way)
  • The Nursery with its entrance structure (as it stands)
Case study: Zwitsal

Laan van Kerschoten

  • Retain current priority
  • Zwitsal with a drive-through structure (as at present)
  • Bus via Laan van Kerschoten
  • Start of adjacent cycle paths on Vlijtseweg North
  • Footpath along the existing path beside the Grift

Vlijtsepark (south of the swimming pool)

  • Pedestrian access

Vlijtsepark (multi-storey car park)

  • North: start at 30 km/h (at the accountancy firm)
  • North: for cyclists and pedestrians, with wide central dividers
  • A little further south, via the Dekamarkt entrance
  • South for cars and deliveries
  • Vlijtseweg has right of way
